Anläßlich der Weltausstellung 1851 in London initierte Howard Staunton das erste große Schachturnier der Geschichte. Neben Staunton nahmen 15 der stärksten Spieler aus Ungarn, Frankreich, Rußland, Deutschland und England teil, u.a. Henry Bird, Bernhard Horwitz, Lionel Kieseritzky, Johann Löwenthal, Josef Szen und Adolf Anderssen.
In diesem Turnier im Ko-System konnte sich Anderssen im Halbfinale überraschend mit 4:1 gegen Staunton durchsetzen und sich im Finale gegen Mamaduke Wyvill aus England mit 4,5:2,5 den Turniersieg sichern. Der favourisierte Staunton unterlag im Spiel um Platz 3 seinem Landsmann Elijah Williams mit 3,5:4,5.
Im Jahre 1851 gab es noch keine Computer geschweige denn Schachprogramme und Datenbanken; deshalb sind bei diesem Turnier Fritz & Co sowie Datenbanken untersagt; der eigene Grips ist wie bei den alten Meistern gefragt!
